Tulane Baseball Gets First Win of the Year

A crowd of 3,013 fans gathered at Turchin Stadium today to watch the Greenies take on Sam Houston State. It was the second game of a three game series, in which the Greenies had lost first game 3-2. Like Friday’s game, pitching played a big role in the game today, as Robby Broach threw six strong innings, allowing two earned runs. Nick Pepitone threw three innings himself, allowing no runs and striking out two. Tulane still had some trouble at the plate, and continued to struggle with runners on until Gunner Wright drove in two during the eighth with a single to left. This catapulted the Green Wave ahead for Pepitone to handle. He did so easily.

Game Notes:

-There were plenty of ugly swings today from the Wave, and it looks like they are still adapting to the new bats.

-The left side of the field still looks shaky, both at third and in left field. This will be something to watch. The Wave will continue to rotate players through until they find the right combination.

-Tulane is still stranding plenty of runners on, 7 today alone. Nick Boullosa is the thief thus far for the Greenies, with steals in both of the first two games, and should be for the rest of the year. His spot at the bottom of the order should lead to run production, as he can get on base easily.

Words:

Gunner Wright on his game winning hit: “I’d been hitting the ball well all day, especially that ball before, I really got into it good. The guys were playing me deep again, I just, bad timing for it I guess, I got a changeup up in the zone I could handle, and I just kind of reached out, tried to find a spot for it.”

Nick Pepitone on whether this game will act as a launch pad for the rest of the year: “As far as a launching pad, I mean I think there’s a possibly, but then again you have to look at it as just 1 of 56. But it’s a big one, it’s tough to get that first one, and from there I think we can really take off.”
