Conference USA Power Rankings - Week Six

Week 6 of the NCAA football season is in the books. The remaining Conference USA squads are putting enough in-conference games in the books for us to get a sense of where the teams really sit. Here's my breakdown of Week 6.

Also, let me know what you think about this. I always enjoyed the power rankings for basketball, so hopefully football will be equally as fun to do.

14. Southern Mississippi (0-5 Record // 0-1 CUSA // Loss against FIU)

Notes: The glory days for the Golden Eagles are way behind them. An 0-5 start to this season is disastrous to begin with. However, a home loss to a bad Florida International team in Week 6 will not bode well for USM. Dumpster fire at its worst.

13. Florida International (1-4 Record // 1-0 CUSA // Win @ Southern Miss)

12. UTEP (1-4 Record // 0-2 CUSA // Loss against Louisiana Tech)

11. UAB (1-4 Record // 0-1 CUSA // Loss against FAU)

Notes: UAB has not won against a Division 1-A program yet this year. They will hope to change that if they want to push toward the middle of their division in the conference.

10. Florida Atlantic (2-4 Record // 1-3 CUSA // Win @ UAB)

Notes: Florida Atlantic has a victory against a major conference opponent --- they smacked down the University of South Florida earlier this season. That's a rare feather for this conference. Nonetheless, the Bulls are truly terrible, and Florida Atlantic won't look to contend this season. Dropping their first three C-USA games has set FAU back already.

9. UT-San Antonio (2-4 Record // 1-1 CUSA // Loss against Marshall)

8. Louisiana Tech (2-4 Record // 1-1 CUSA // Win @ UTEP)

Notes: Took a bad home loss to Tulane a few weeks back. They came back by picking up a road win against UTEP. Unfortunately, the Miners are a substandard team this season, and Louisiana Tech hasn't impressed yet.

7. Tulsa (1-4 Record // 0-1 CUSA // Loss in OT against Rice)

Notes: Their record is atrocious. However, they played a tougher non-conference schedule than most C-USA teams. On top of that, they challenged Rice en route to an overtime loss. I would expect Tulsa to have a bit of upside this season in the conference.

6. University of North Texas (2-3 Record // 0-1 CUSA // Loss @ Tulane)

5. Middle Tennessee State (3-3 Record // 1-1 CUSA // Loss @ ECU)

4. Tulane (4-2 Record // Win against UNT)

Notes: Best start in recent memory? Check. Breaking the Homecoming Curse, a losing streak reaching all the way back to 2006? Check. The Green Wave has momentum. Toughest games left on the schedule are next week's matchup with East Carolina, and the Rice game in Houston to close out the regular season. Several more cupcakes will help Tulane pave the way to bowl eligibility, however.

3. Rice (3-2 Record // 2-0 CUSA // Win in OT against Tulsa)

2. East Carolina (4-1 Record // 2-0 CUSA // Win @ MTSU)

Notes: MTSU is one of the stronger CUSA teams this year, so a road win against them will help East Carolina secure its division. CUSA East will come down to Marshall and East Carolina. That matchup will come in the last game of the regular season for the Pirates.

1. Marshall (3-2 Record // 1-0 CUSA // Win against UTSA)

Sound off on Twitter. @fearthewaveblog.
