Coach Toledo Resigns (Hullabaloo Story)

Story from our parent organization, The Tulane Hullabaloo

By Ryan Jones

In an early-morning Wilson Center press conference, Tulane Athletic Director Rick Dickson announced that Bob Toledo has resigned from his position as football head coach. Dickson said that offensive line coach and passing game coordinator Mark Hutson would serve as the Green Wave's interim head coach through the remainder of the season.

"I want to thank Rick for giving me the opportunity to coach at Tulane," Toledo said through a press release. "I also want to thank my coaching staff for their hard work, dedication and loyalty, as well as the players. We worked extremely hard, and I feel like we did our best. I wish the team and coaches the best for the remainder of the season."

Toledo, who was midway through his fifth season with the school, recorded a 15-40 record with the Wave and was coming off of a disappointing 44-7 home loss to UTEP Saturday. He had received a one-year contract extension following the 2010 season with an option for an additional year.

Dickson, wearing the same plaid button-down and navy suit he donned during his Playbook speech in the spring, said that the loss and mounting fan criticism toward the team sparked the midseason move. He said that following the Green Wave's 45-6 loss to Army Oct. 1, a "toxic" fan reaction began to affect both the coaches and players.

"We are very appreciative of the job Bob and his staff did both on and off the field during their four-and-a-half seasons," Dickson said. "A transition like this is always difficult, and we are very grateful that Bob and his assistants will ensure that the program can continue to move forward without interruption for the next six games."

Dickson said that a national search for Tulane's next head football coach was already underway. Though he declined to commit to a specific salary range, Dickson said that the athletic department was prepared to pay more for its next coach than it has in the past.

"As we outlined last spring, the university has committed additional resources to athletics with the express purpose of enhancing our football program," he said. "Among those increases are overall budgets, academic support and salary pools."
